The painting I chose was Camille Monet in Japanese Costume and was painted by Claude Monet in 1876. The piece was done in oil on a large canvas. The women is life size. This is one of my favorite painting because of quirkiness of it. I also really enjoy the vibrant colors of her kimono and the fans surrounding her. The painting is joyful and lighthearted, however has a nightmarish undertone because of the juxtaposition between the women's happy expression and the angry Japanese man in her clothes. Nevertheless I love this painting because it makes me think, I could stare at it forever and would never get bored of it. Each time I look at this painting I always notice something new. If i could rename this painting, which I would gladly do, I would name it Cultural Appropriation. Although this painting is gorgeous and I love it, it is pretty controversial and shows a women dressing in clothes that she does not understand the meaning of and really shouldn't be flaunting. In conclusion, I love this painting because I feel like it really gives the audience a sense of the times.
